Root canal therapy is the removal of the diseased part of the inside of the tooth and its replacement with an inert filling material.

Symptoms of Tooth Infection
Infection from a tooth (as pictured around the root of the tooth on the left) can lead to pain and tenderness. There may be swelling and the presence of a gum boil. On some occassions, there can be chronic infection around a tooth which may be painless yet visible on x-rays.

What is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy is required when a tooth is infected and cannot be put right with just a filling. Root canal therapy will involve gaining access to the tooth and removing the infected portion. This will relieve the pain and allow the tooth to be saved and restored.

Root canal therapy is usually painless as it is carried out under local anesthetic, and research from dental journals show it to be approximately 95% effective. The tooth can then be restored with a filling or crown, to make the treatment more succesful.
